Hi!
We are living in Sweden and my 6 month old son has milk allergy so the BVC Doctor has prescribed Nutramigen but my son doesn't like it. I heard that we should use vanilla sugar to sweeten it - have you heard of this? How much should we use to make a 200ml bottle sweeter?
Thanks!

Dear Ali,
This is a usual way of making the formula more palatable. I would suggest about a half or a whole teaspoon of vanilla sugar and the same amount of ordinary sugar to start with. Vanilla sugar alone can give a little strange taste. This is not what we would usually recommend to any child, lots of sugar.
When discussed with pediatric dentists they have explained that it should not be a problem to do this for a short period of time; 7-10 days. You may use as much sugar as it takes for your son to accept the Nutramigen, once he accepts it please do remember to take all the sugar away gradually so that he goes on with unsweetened Nutramigen as this is the best for you child's future teeth, among other things.
Another thing to take into consideration to increase acceptance is to serve Nutramigen in a different way, for example as porridge instead of in a bottle. The BVC nurse or doctor might be able to refer you to a dietician who could help you with information, recipies and how to find products in Swedish food-stores.
Do not hesitate to ask again if you have any question.
Good luck!
